Easy Printable Mother’s Day Handprint Crafts for Kids

The Ones We’ve Made (and Remade) with Our Own Kids Over the Past 6 Years

If you’ve been around Mr Mintz for a while, you know how this works: we don’t sell crafts we haven’t made ourselves. Every single template in our shop has been tested at our kitchen table — first with our son (who was 6 when we started this whole adventure) and now with our daughter, who’s 8 and still loves getting paint on her fingers.

Mother’s Day is one of our favorite seasons because these aren’t just crafts. They’re keepsakes. Real handprints. Real fingerprints. The kind of thing you pull out of a drawer ten years from now and think, “How were their hands ever that small?”

This year, I wanted to put together a guide to our absolute favorites — the printable Mother’s Day crafts that have worked best for us, that get the best reactions from moms, and that even our most “I don’t want to do crafts today” kid couldn’t resist.

Every one of these is an instant digital download — print at home, add tiny hands and paint, and you have a frame-worthy gift in under 30 minutes. They also work beautifully in a classroom or daycare setting (we hear from teachers all the time!).

Not Sure Which One to Pick? Here’s My Quick Guide

After six years of making these with kids of all ages (our own, their friends, and based on thousands of customer photos), here’s what I’d recommend:

Toddlers (ages 2–3): Start with the Fingerprint Dandelion. Zero cutting, zero frustration. Just fingers and paint.

Preschool (ages 3–5): The Footprint Bundle is magic at this age. Eight designs means you can make gifts for Mom, Grandma, and still have options left.

Kindergarten & up (ages 5–8): The Pop-Up Card. It’s got that wow factor that makes older kids proud of what they made.

Classroom or daycare: Any of these! One purchase = unlimited prints. The Fingerprint Dandelion is the easiest for large groups.

Fingerprint Dandelion — “I Couldn’t Wish for a Better Mom”

  • Ages: 2+ (our toddler-proof favorite)
  • Time: 10–15 minutes
  • You need: Printer + washable paint or ink pad
  • Skills: Fine motor control, color mixing, patterns

This is where it all started for us, and it’s still our #1 bestseller after six years.

When our son was 6, we made the very first version of this dandelion together. I remember him carefully pressing each finger onto the paper, choosing different colors for each “petal.” He was so focused. And when he gave it to me on Mother’s Day, I genuinely teared up — because it wasn’t just a craft. It was his fingerprints. His little hands. Right there on the paper.

We’ve made it every year since. And here’s the thing that gets me: the fingerprints get bigger each year. We have all six dandelions lined up on the wall, and you can literally watch the kids grow. That’s why families tell us they’ve turned this into an annual tradition.

It’s perfect for toddlers and preschoolers because there’s no cutting or folding — just dip and press. But even our 8-year-old still asks to make one. (There’s also a Grandma version, which we use every year.)

For teachers: This is the easiest one to do with a large group. Set up a paint station, hand out templates, 15 minutes, done. I’ve heard from teachers who do this with classes of 25+ kids and say cleanup takes 5 minutes.

Pop-Up Card “MOM I ♥ U”

  • Ages: 5+ (great for kindergarten and up)
  • Time: 20–30 minutes
  • You need: Printer, scissors, glue stick
  • Skills: Cutting, folding, spatial reasoning, multi-step instructions

This one is all about the reveal. When Mom opens the card, a giant 3D “MOM I ♥ U” pops right out, surrounded by hearts.

Our daughter made this one last year (you can see her holding it in the product photo — that’s actually her!). She was 7 at the time, and it was the first craft where she did everything completely by herself: printing, cutting, folding, gluing. The pride on her face when she handed it over was worth a thousand store-bought cards.

A tip from experience: let them cut at their own pace. Our daughter wanted to rush through the cutting and the first attempt was a bit wonky. We printed another copy (that’s the beauty of digital downloads — unlimited prints!), and the second one turned out perfect.

For classrooms: Works wonderfully as a 30-minute art session for K–2nd grade. If you have younger siblings or mixed-age groups, pair this with the fingerprint dandelion for the little ones.

Handprint & Footprint Craft Bundle — 8 Designs

  • Ages: 2–8 (works across all ages)
  • Time: 10–20 minutes per design
  • You need: Printer + washable paint
  • Skills: Body awareness, creativity, vocabulary (each design has a word-play message)
  • Includes: 8 designs: dinosaur, owl, apple, heart, sunshine, strawberry, flower, truck

This bundle exists because of a problem we had ourselves: we could never pick just one.

Every year, we’d need gifts for Mom (that’s me), Grandma, and at least one auntie. And both kids wanted to make something different. So we created this bundle — 8 designs, all using handprints or footprints, each with a cute message like “OWL always love you” or “I love you to my CORE” (that one’s a dinosaur made from a footprint — our daughter’s all-time favorite).

The footprint dinosaur deserves a special mention. When our daughter first saw it at age 4, she literally squealed. She made three of them. Three. One for me, one for Grandma, and one “for her room.” That dino is still hanging on her wall.

For teachers and daycare: This is the bundle I’d recommend. Print all 8 designs, set up stations, let each child choose their favorite. Every kid’s art turns out different, which they love. And parents love that it’s not the same craft every child in the class brings home.

This Mothers Day set includes an “You are my sunshine,” a “You Make My Heart Saur,” an “Owl Always Love You Owl,” "Mom, I Love you Berry Much", "Happy Mother's Day" and more.

Why We Make Handprint Crafts (Not Just Coloring Pages)

I know there are hundreds of free Mother’s Day printables on Pinterest. I’ve downloaded plenty of them myself! Most are coloring pages or cut-and-glue cards, and they’re totally fine for a quick activity.

But here’s why I started making handprint and fingerprint templates instead:

A coloring page is someone else’s drawing that your child fills in. It looks the same as every other kid’s. A handprint craft is your child’s actual body — their unique print — becoming the art. No two are alike. And next year, the prints will be bigger. That’s why moms frame these.

There’s also a real developmental benefit that I didn’t fully appreciate until I watched my own kids do these over the years. When a 3-year-old carefully dips a finger in paint and presses it onto a specific spot, they’re practicing fine motor control, hand-eye coordination, and following instructions — all while thinking they’re just playing. Our occupational therapist friend actually recommended fingerprint activities for exactly this reason.

Why It's Worth Starting Early

I learned this the hard way. Our first year, I waited until the week before Mother's Day. The kids were cranky, the paint dried weird because we rushed, and I ended up re-doing half of it myself at 11 PM. Not the vibe.

Now I always give us a few weeks: pick the craft, print the template, then do it on a calm afternoon when everyone's in the mood. The secret? If the first attempt goes sideways, you have time to print again and try once more.

Questions We Get Asked a Lot

What can a 2 or 3-year-old make for Mother’s Day?

The Fingerprint Dandelion is perfect. It’s our most toddler-friendly craft — no cutting, no folding, just dipping a finger in paint and pressing. We’ve had customers send us photos of 18-month-olds doing it (with a little help). The result always looks beautiful.

Do these work for a classroom?

Absolutely — that’s actually one of our biggest use cases. Teachers buy one template and print as many copies as they need. The Fingerprint Dandelion works for any age and takes about 15 minutes. The 8-Design Bundle is great when you want each child to pick a different craft. We hear from teachers with classes of 20–30 kids regularly, and the feedback is always that it’s the easiest Mother’s Day activity they’ve done.

How is this different from free printable crafts on Pinterest?

Most free printables are coloring pages or cut-and-paste activities. Ours use the child’s actual handprint or fingerprint as the artwork. That’s what makes each one truly unique, and that’s why moms frame them instead of recycling them. We’ve also tested every design with real kids (our own!) over six years, so the instructions, sizing, and age recommendations are battle-tested.

What supplies do I need?

A printer and washable paint (or an ink pad). For the Pop-Up Card, also scissors and a glue stick. That’s it. No specialty craft supplies, no trip to the store. We designed everything to use what you already have at home.

Can I print the template more than once?

Yes! Unlimited prints, forever. Toddler ate the first one? Print again. Want to make one for Grandma too? Print again. We mean it — our daughter once made five copies of the same dinosaur footprint because she loved it so much.

Is there a version for Grandma?

Yes! The Fingerprint Dandelion has a dedicated Grandma version, and we have a full Grandma Handprint Fingerprint Bundle with 8 unique designs.

Are these crafts educational?

More than you’d think! Fingerprint and handprint crafts develop fine motor control, hand-eye coordination, and color recognition. For older kids, crafts like the Pop-Up Card build spatial reasoning, sequencing, and the ability to follow multi-step instructions. We didn’t design them as “educational” activities, but that’s exactly what they are — wrapped in fun.

What size paper do I need?

All our templates come in both US Letter (8.5×11”) and A4 sizes. Works on any home printer.
