4 Engaging Summer STEM Activities to Spark Your Kids' Curiosity and Learning

As a parent, summer break can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it’s a fantastic opportunity to spend more time with our kids. On the other hand, keeping them entertained and away from screens can feel like an insurmountable task. My children, like many others, are magnetically drawn to their tablets and video games. I’ve often found myself battling to get them to do something—anything—else.

Last summer, after one too many hours of YouTube and video games, I knew something had to change. I started researching and experimenting with different projects that would not only keep my kids busy but also stimulate their minds and teach them new skills. Through a lot of trial and error, I found a handful of activities that truly captivated their interest and turned our summer into a season of learning and fun.

These projects have been lifesavers for our family, transforming endless hours of screen time into valuable, hands-on experiences. Whether it’s building a bird feeder with a camera to observe nature up close or crafting a water rocket to understand basic physics, these activities have brought us closer together and ignited a spark of curiosity in my kids.

I’m excited to share these ideas with you. I hope they can bring the same joy and educational benefits to your family as they have to mine. Here are some of the best projects for kids to dive into this summer, ensuring their break is filled with discovery, creativity, and a lot less screen time.

Project 1: Bird Feeder with Camera

One of the most rewarding projects we tried was setting up a smart bird feeder with a camera. My 10-year-old son took the lead on assembling it, and even my 6-year-old daughter was eager to help. It took a few days for the birds to find it, but the excitement in our house when the first bird arrived was incredible.

Every day, the kids eagerly check the feeder, noting which birds visit, how much they eat, and their behavior. It’s like having a pet that you feed and care for, but without the mess since the birds are free to come and go. The feeder's camera captures high-resolution images and videos, which we save and organize into a digital bird-watching album. The app even notifies us when a new bird arrives, making it a constant source of fascination.

This project not only kept the kids engaged but also sparked a deep interest in nature and wildlife. They’ve learned to recognize different bird species and understand their habits. The feeder has become a centerpiece of our backyard, providing endless entertainment and educational opportunities.

Project 2: The Rocket Bottle Launcher Kit

Another thrilling summer project was the Bottle Launcher Kit . This ingenious device uses a 2-liter soda bottle and a bike pump to create a high-flying water rocket, making science and fun go hand in hand.

My son assembled it with little help, and our 6-year-old was excited to pump the air. The first launch was spectacular—seeing the bottle soar into the sky brought sheer delight. The launcher’s built-in safety valve ensured we felt secure during play.

This project turned our backyard into a mini science lab, with the kids experimenting with different water levels and launch angles. It provided endless entertainment and a practical lesson in physics and engineering.

Project 3: Insect Butterfly Garden

Another unforgettable summer project we embarked on was raising butterflies with the Insect Butterfly Garden. This hands-on science activity allowed us to witness the incredible metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly.

This engaging Butterfly Kit with Live Caterpillars includes 10 caterpillars and all the supplies needed to watch them metamorphose into beautiful butterflies. The kit features a reusable habitat, perfect for observing each stage of their development. The included STEM Butterfly Journal allows kids to document their observations and learn about the fascinating lifecycle of butterflies. This educational activity is ideal for sparking curiosity and promoting hands-on learning.

The kit arrived with five live caterpillars in a container filled with nutritious food. We placed the container in a safe spot away from direct sunlight and watched as the caterpillars ate, spun silk, and grew to ten times their original size. After about a week, they transformed into chrysalides, which we carefully moved to the mesh habitat.

Over the next seven to ten days, we eagerly observed as the butterflies emerged. It was a magical moment when the Painted Lady butterflies spread their wings for the first time. The kids loved feeding them with the included dropper and nectar recipe, as well as slices of fruit.

Releasing the butterflies was the highlight. We took the habitat outside, unzipped the cover, and watched in amazement as our butterflies took their first flight, often landing on little hands and faces before flying away. It was a beautiful experience that connected us with nature and provided endless learning opportunities.

Project 4: Earth Interactive Globe

Our final summer project was the Earth Interactive Globe. This AR-powered globe turned our tablets into portals for exploring the world, making screen time both fun and educational.

Despite the kids using a gadget, it felt like a valuable learning experience. They explored various countries, learned about different cultures, animals, and landmarks through interactive games and quizzes. The globe doesn't show borders, but the app provides all the necessary details, making learning engaging and immersive.

My children loved collecting stickers in their passports and "traveling" around the world. One afternoon, they were thrilled to learn about the Great Barrier Reef. They discovered fascinating facts about marine life, and my daughter couldn't stop talking about the different species of colorful fish and corals. This project not only taught them geography but also sparked a curiosity about different cultures and places. It was a perfect blend of technology and education, keeping them entertained and informed throughout the summer.  You can order this interactive globe here.

Summer is an ideal time for kids to explore, learn, and have fun away from screens. These four projects—building a bird feeder with a camera, launching water rockets, raising butterflies, and exploring with the interactive globe—have filled our summer with discovery and joy. Each activity offers a unique blend of hands-on learning and excitement, fostering curiosity and creativity. Whether observing nature, experimenting with science, or exploring the world virtually, these projects have made our summer memorable and enriching. I hope they inspire and engage your family just as much.
